What is Free Agent Source?
Free Agent Source delivers company resources for independent professionals: client invoicing, professional liability insurance, payroll, accounting, expense reimbursement, 401(k) retirement plan.
To join, you become an employee of Free Agent Source. We are a company of Free Agents. We work for ourselves and our clients.
We are creative and diverse on the outside: many ethnic origins, many ages, many life styles, many talents.
We are disciplined on the inside: conservative accounting, accurate payroll, solid information systems.
What's different about Free Agent Source?
-
You own the relationship with your client. There is no agency or "gate keeper" controlling access to your clients.
-
Our mission is to take care of you the Free Agent. You take care of your clients.
-
We are transparent. You know the hourly rate billed to your clients and how much of that you keep.
What do you mean by "Free Agent"?
Independent contractor. Independent consultant. Independent professional. We call you and (ourselves) "Free Agents". "Free Agent" means you are not bound to any one job or even one employer. You are an employee of Free Agent Source, but you work independently. You can move freely from client to client, or serve multiple clients simultaneously, without ever enrolling again as an employee at another company.
How can I find out more?
You can
contact us for a free consultation or you can attend one of our free
webinars, which last about 20-minutes with a Q&A session afterward.
Why was Free Agent Source created?
We created Free Agent Source because we needed a company to support our professions as independent contractors. We exist to serve Free Agents. Traditional staffing agencies focus on serving the client and maintaining their role as "gate-keeper" between client and contractor. They often try to control your access to jobs which maximizes margin (difference between rate billed to the client and rate paid to the contractor). This puts us contractors at a disadvantage and reduces our earning potential. No one is defending our interests.

How much will I earn? How much does Free Agent Source earn?
-
Free Agent Source earns: $5 per hour plus 15% of net revenue.
-
In other words, your commission is 85% of net revenue.
-
Try the Rate Table. It will help you understand how much to bill clients.
Here's an example:
If you want to earn at least $25.00 per hour in gross pay, find your billable rate.
Step 1) Divide your gross earnings by 0.85 (that's your commission, 85% of net revenue):
$25.00 ÷ 0.85 = $29.41
Step 2) Add corporate overhead costs of $5 per hour:
$29.41 + $5 = $34.41
Step 3) For simplicity, round your billable rate up to the nearest $0.25 which is $34.50 or to make it even simpler, round up to the nearest dollar which is
$35.00 per hour.
Using the same example, here's how to work backward from the billable rate to find your gross pay:
Step 1) Subtract corporate overhead costs of $5 per hour:
$35.00 - $5 = $30.00
Step 2) Multiply your billable rate by 0.85 (that's your commission, 85% of net revenue):
$30.00 * 0.85 = $25.50
If you bill $35.00 per hour, your gross pay will be
$25.50 per hour.
How does it work? How do I get paid?
-
1) You become an employee of Free Agent Source.
-
2) Every Free Agent has his / her own cost center within the company so we can track your revenues and expenses. Your employee number is your company cost center.
-
3) Everyone earns minimum wage. You earn the remainder of your compensation when your clients pay their invoiced amounts.
-
4) When you are ready to start work with a client, you request a contract. We present it to your client.
-
5) You decide the rate billed to your client.
-
6) When we receive a signed contract, you can begin work.
-
7) You work for your client.
-
8) At the end of each week, you report hours worked for your client on a timesheet.
-
9) Your timesheet is processed through payroll and you will be paid minimum wage (plus overtime when applicable) for hours reported on your timesheet for the week as an advance against commission earnings. This ensures we are in full compliance with state employment regulations. You do not earn any further compensation for those hours until the client pays the invoice. This is the essence of life as an independent contractor.
-
10) Free Agent Source sends an invoice to your client.
-
11) When the we receive payment from your client, we mark the outstanding invoice as paid and post the paid amount to your cost center. Then we deduct corporate overhead cost of $5 per hour and earnings of 15% of net revenue. Next we deduct the minimum wage amount that was paid for hours worked (essentially an advance on commission). What remains is yours to be paid out.
-
12) This remaining amount is held in your "Available Funds" account. You can request a payout to yourself at any time as either commission (through payroll) or request reimbursement for allowed business expenses. That's right, you can submit an expense report for allowed business expenses to be paid from your Available Funds. Expense reimbursement will be paid as a pre-tax company expense (instead of through payroll as commission, which is taxable).
-
13) Finally, you can leave a balance in your Available Funds account, to be paid later. It is always useful to keep some available funds in your account so you can pay it out later during vacations from work or illness. This is the only way you can have paid vacation, paid sick leave or paid holiday as a Free Agent.
Why must I become an employee?
You do not have the benefits or protection of a company if you do not become an employee. We would not be able to offer you a 401(k) retirement plan, a medical insurance plan, or a wide range of other services that are part of corporate America. Bottom line, you either need to be an employee of Free Agent Source or you need to create your own company. Free Agent Source is for people who want all the benefits of Free Agency without the administrative hassle of managing your own company. Free Agent Source is also for people who want to use it as a transition from being a regular employee at to creating your own company.
Why pay minimum wage instead of full compensation?
Since you are an employee of Free Agent Source, we must pay for all hours worked. We pay minimum wage to keep expenses low, which makes our services to you more efficient. If we paid your full compensation up front when your time sheet is submitted, then we would essentially "float" that wage payment using a loan from the bank until we receive payment from your client. If you prefer to be paid in full, then Free Agent Source may not be for you. Perhaps consider a traditional staffing agency or a regular employment relationship with another company. There is another reason for paying minimum wage. We feel very strongly that you the Free Agent and us (the company) remain focused on accounts receivable. Get the money in from clients before paying it out as compensation to Free Agents. Since your compensation (and ours) depend on prompt payment from clients, we will all be keen to choose clients who pay promptly.
How often do you process Payroll and Expense Reports?
We process payroll and expense reports once each week. Timesheets and expense reports submitted by midnight local time on Saturday will be processed the following week. You will be paid by direct deposit into your bank account on Friday, following the Saturday deadline for timesheets and expense reports. If Friday is a holiday, funds will be deposited on Thursday. The pay period is from Saturday to Friday. This means you have one day to report your time in the timesheet after the end of the last day of the pay period. The same cycle applies to expense reports. Reports submitted by midnight local time on Saturday will be reimbursed the following Friday by direct deposit into your bank account.
What if I have my own company but I want to use Free Agent Source?
No problem! You would become an employee of Free Agent Source and remain the owner of your company. Invoices for your time will be presented to and paid by your company. Essentially, you become a sub-contractor to your own company. As an employee of Free Agent Source, you gain all the benefits. As an owner of your company you direct the company's business activities. Your company provides goods or services to clients and gets paid for that. The labor input (your time) is simply provided by Free Agent Source. You should no longer consider yourself an employee of your company, but of course you are still the owner. As always, you set your billing rate and it can be changed as needed. You decide how much your company will pay you through Free Agent Source.
How do you protect my privacy?
Please see the Privacy Policy for complete details. Here is the short answer: As an employer, we protect employee and client information according to strict standards and employment practices. Employee information is reported to designated suppliers of Free Agent Source (such as employee benefits providers, insurance carriers, banks which distribute pay and expense reimbursements), to government tax authorities and to government regulators for the purpose of compliance with employment regulations. We will never distribute employee information for any reason beyond those normal administrative functions as an employer.
